Does Starbucks accept crypto? The honest answer for 2026
Starbucks does not take crypto at the till. Buy a Starbucks gift card with Bitcoin, USDT or Monero, no KYC, code delivered in minutes on Genghis.

You hold crypto, you buy coffee every week, and the two never meet at the till. Starbucks does not list Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any other token as a payment method. Not at the register, not in the Starbucks app, not on any national site. The short answer is no. Starbucks does not accept crypto directly.
The useful answer is the second half. Starbucks does accept its own gift card, and a Starbucks gift card can be bought with crypto. On Genghis you pay with Bitcoin, USDT, Solana, Monero, or any of 300+ supported tokens. The code arrives by email once the transaction confirms, and it loads into the Starbucks app like any card bought with a bank card.
Starbucks carries an unusual amount of crypto history for a coffee chain. It ran a Bitcoin reload partnership for three years. It ran an NFT loyalty beta for 15 months. Both are closed. Neither ever made crypto a payment method at the counter, and the confusion they left behind is why this question still gets asked.
This guide separates what is true today from what was true in 2021. It covers the closed routes, the one that still works, which region card to buy, which token to pay with, and how to load the code into the app.

Starbucks and crypto in 2026, what works and what does not
Four different intentions bring people to this page. They get answered as if they were one question, and they are four. Here is each one with the honest version.
| What you want to do | Possible at Starbucks | How it actually works |
|---|---|---|
| Pay for a coffee with Bitcoin at the counter | No | No till in any market takes a token. A Starbucks card balance is accepted everywhere the brand operates, and it can be funded with crypto. |
| Reload the Starbucks app with Bitcoin | Not directly | The third-party reload route closed in March 2023. Adding a gift card code to the app achieves the same balance. |
| Earn crypto or NFTs from Starbucks Rewards | No | The Odyssey NFT beta ended on 31 March 2024. Stars are the only currency the loyalty programme issues today. |
| Turn a Starbucks card back into crypto | No | A gift card balance moves one way. Buy the value you plan to drink, not a stockpile. |
The crypto routes Starbucks opened, and then closed
Most of the confusion around this question comes from two real programmes that no longer exist. Both were widely covered when they launched and quietly reported when they ended. That asymmetry is why old articles still say yes.
The Bakkt reload, 2020 to 2023
Starbucks was a launch partner of the Bakkt consumer app, which let users convert Bitcoin to dollars and load the result onto a Starbucks Card. The coffee was always paid in fiat. The conversion simply happened one screen earlier.
Bakkt announced in February 2023 that it was leaving the consumer business to focus on B2B, and the app was switched off on 16 March 2023 (CoinDesk, 2023). The Starbucks reload, the linked debit card and the gift card features went with it. Nothing replaced it.
Starbucks Odyssey, the NFT loyalty beta
Odyssey launched in December 2022 as an extension of Starbucks Rewards, built on Polygon. Members earned digital collectibles called Stamps by completing challenges. It never touched payment at any point.
The beta closed on 31 March 2024 after 15 months, and existing Stamps were moved to a third-party NFT marketplace so holders could keep trading them (Decrypt, 2024). Starbucks Rewards continues without any blockchain component.
El Salvador, the one market where the law did the work
In September 2021 El Salvador made Bitcoin legal tender, and every business large enough to process it had to accept BTC. Starbucks locations in the country were covered by that rule, which is where the widely shared photos of Bitcoin coffee payments came from.
The obligation ended on 30 January 2025, when the Salvadoran Congress amended the Bitcoin Law under an IMF loan agreement and made private-sector acceptance voluntary (France 24, 2025). Merchants may still take BTC. None of them has to.
The country remains a serious place to spend crypto for reasons that have nothing to do with the repealed mandate. El Salvador ranks 2nd of 79 countries in our Livability Ranking against 20th in the Rails Ranking, on 57% unbanked population and remittances worth 24% of GDP (Genghis Research, 2026). The gap between those two ranks is the whole argument: the need is structural, the legal headline was not. The detail sits in El Salvador’s crypto livability rank.
Why buy Starbucks credit with crypto
1. No fiat conversion on your side
Selling BTC on an exchange, waiting for the bank transfer, then topping up the app is three steps and two settlement delays. Buying the card with crypto is one payment. The conversion happens inside the purchase.
2. Zero KYC on the purchase
Genghis asks for an email address to deliver the code. No identity document, no selfie, no proof of address. A coffee card should not require a compliance file.
3. Over 300 cryptocurrencies accepted
Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, USDC, Solana, Monero, Litecoin, Dogecoin and the long tail below them are all valid at checkout. You spend the asset you hold rather than the one a processor prefers.
4. Instant delivery, fully automated
The code is issued as soon as the transaction confirms on chain. There is no manual review queue and no business-hours restriction. Most orders complete in under two minutes.
5. Zero platform fees
The price you see is the price you pay. Genghis adds no service charge on top of the card value, so a 25 USD card costs 25 USD worth of crypto plus your own network fee.
6. Privacy coins supported natively
Monero is a first-class payment option, not an afterthought. If your reason for holding XMR is that your coffee habit is your own business, the checkout respects that. The full list of tokens sits on the Monero gift card page.
How to buy a Starbucks gift card with crypto, step by step
Six steps, about two minutes, no account required. The flow is identical for every region card in the catalog.
- Open the Starbucks card page. Go to the Starbucks gift card page on Genghis.
- Pick your country. Choose the card that matches the market where you order coffee.
- Choose the value. Select a denomination from the list for that region.
- Enter your email. The code is delivered there and nowhere else.
- Pay in your token. Pick BTC, USDT, SOL, XMR or any of 300+ options and send from your wallet.
- Add the code to the app. Open Starbucks, go to the payment section and enter the code.
The mechanics behind the checkout are described on the how it works page.
Starbucks card values and regions in the catalog
Genghis lists 22 Starbucks products across regions. The denominations below were read from the live catalog on 31 August 2026. Currency and country are fixed at purchase, so buy the one that matches the stores you actually walk into.
| Region | Denominations available | Range |
|---|---|---|
| United States (USD) | 20 values | 5 USD to 500 USD |
| United Kingdom (GBP) | 17 values | 2 GBP to 150 GBP |
| Canada (CAD) | 20 values | 5 CAD to 500 CAD |
| Germany (EUR) | 4 values | 5 EUR to 50 EUR |
| Mexico (MXN) | 8 values | 50 MXN to 500 MXN |
| Singapore (SGD) | 5 values | 10 SGD to 100 SGD |
Japan, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Colombia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are also stocked. The Starbucks UK card is the one to pick for British stores.
How the gift card route compares to the alternatives
Four ways exist to get crypto value into a Starbucks cup. They differ on identity checks, settlement time and cost.
| Route | Identity check | Time to coffee | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gift card bought with crypto on Genghis | None, email only | Under two minutes | Card value plus your network fee. No platform fee. |
| Sell on an exchange, then top up the app | Full KYC, document and selfie | Hours to days, bank dependent | Trading fee, withdrawal fee, spread, plus a taxable disposal. |
| Crypto debit card | Full KYC, plus residency limits | Days to weeks for issuance | Conversion spread on every purchase, sometimes a monthly fee. |
| Third-party reload app | Not applicable | Route closed in March 2023 | No longer available in any market. |
One point on tax
Spending crypto is a disposal in most jurisdictions, exactly like selling it. The gift card route removes the bank leg and the identity file, not the tax event. Keep your records either way.
Which cryptocurrency should you use
Bitcoin (BTC), the default
The most widely held asset and the one most people reach for first. On-chain fees vary with congestion, so a 10 USD coffee card is worth checking before you send. The Bitcoin gift card page lists what BTC covers.
USDT and USDC, no volatility risk
Stablecoins are the practical choice for small recurring purchases. A 25 USD card costs 25 USDT today and 25 USDT next month. Details on the USDT gift card page.
Solana (SOL), cheapest to send
Network fees sit at fractions of a cent and confirmation is near immediate. For low-value cards bought often, that matters proportionally more than it does on a large order.
Ethereum (ETH), universal but watch gas
ETH is accepted and works fine. Mainnet gas can rival the value of a small card during busy periods, so check the fee before confirming a 5 EUR purchase.
Monero (XMR), maximum privacy
XMR settles in minutes and leaves no public trail linking your wallet to the order. Combined with no KYC on the purchase, it is the most private way to fund a coffee balance.
How to load the code into the Starbucks app
The code behaves like any card bought in store. Open the Starbucks app, go to the payment or cards section, choose to add a card, then enter the code and PIN from your email.
The balance merges into your Starbucks Card and pays at the counter, in the drive-through and for mobile orders. Purchases made with it earn Stars in the normal way. If the app rejects the code, check that the card region matches your account country.
Is it safe to buy a Starbucks gift card with crypto on Genghis
Codes come from licensed distributors rather than the resale market, which is where most invalid-code stories originate. Each code is issued to one order and delivered to one email address.
Payment is handled by a non-custodial processor, so Genghis never holds your funds. If a code fails on first use, support checks it against the supplier record and replaces it. The wider comparison sits in the guide to no-KYC crypto gift card marketplaces.
Beyond Starbucks, the rest of the day paid in crypto
Coffee is a small line in a monthly budget, and the same route covers the larger ones. Groceries, delivery and restaurants all run on gift cards that Genghis stocks.
Start with the food and grocery gift card catalog, or read how to pay for food delivery with crypto and how to buy restaurant gift cards with crypto.
Earn Genghis Points on every Starbucks card
Every order earns Genghis Points, which convert into discounts on later purchases. A weekly coffee card is the kind of small repeat order that accumulates faster than a single large one. The rules sit on the Genghis rewards page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for a coffee at Starbucks with Bitcoin?
Not directly. No Starbucks register accepts BTC as a payment method. Buy a Starbucks gift card with Bitcoin on Genghis, add the code to the app, and the balance pays at the counter like any other card.
Do I need KYC to buy a Starbucks gift card with crypto?
No. Genghis requires an email address for delivery and nothing else. There is no identity document, no selfie and no proof of address at any point in the checkout.
How long does delivery take?
The code is emailed as soon as your transaction confirms on chain, typically in under two minutes. Delivery is automated, so it does not depend on business hours or a manual review.
Can I still reload my Starbucks Card with Bitcoin through Bakkt?
No. Bakkt shut its consumer app on 16 March 2023 and the Starbucks reload closed with it (CoinDesk, 2023). A gift card code added to the app produces the same balance.
Does Starbucks still run the Odyssey NFT programme?
No. The Odyssey beta ended on 31 March 2024 after 15 months, and Stamps were moved to a third-party NFT marketplace (Decrypt, 2024). Starbucks Rewards now runs without any blockchain element.
Can I use Monero to buy a Starbucks gift card?
Yes. XMR is a supported payment option at checkout alongside BTC, ETH, USDT, SOL and 300+ other tokens. It settles in minutes and leaves no public trail linking the wallet to the order.
Are there platform fees on Genghis?
No. A 25 USD card costs 25 USD worth of crypto. The only extra cost is the network fee your own wallet charges to broadcast the transaction.
What happens if the Starbucks code does not work?
Contact support with the order reference and the code is checked against the supplier record. An unredeemed code is replaced. Codes come from licensed distributors rather than resale, so this is rare.
Can I use a US Starbucks card in the United Kingdom?
No. Starbucks runs separate card systems per market and a code redeems only in the country it was issued for. Pick the region card that matches the stores you visit.
Does a Starbucks gift card balance expire?
In most markets the balance does not expire and carries no dormancy fee. Terms are set by Starbucks per country rather than by Genghis, so check the ones supplied with your code.
Which other large chains work the same way?
The gift card route covers the major retailers too. The answers are in the guides on whether Walmart accepts crypto, whether Target accepts crypto and whether Amazon accepts crypto.
The bottom line
Starbucks does not accept crypto at the counter, does not reload the app with Bitcoin any more, and no longer issues anything on a blockchain. The two programmes that made people think otherwise both closed, in March 2023 and March 2024.
What Starbucks does accept, at full face value in every market, is its own gift card. Buy that card with BTC, USDT, SOL or XMR, load the code, and the coffee is paid in crypto without a bank in the loop. The wider version of this argument is in where to spend crypto in 2026.
